Jason Yu takes the old fashioned and adds a spicy rye, right here

A timeless drink that was originally known as a bittered sling – it was essentially just sugar, water, and alcohol. Yawn. Glad to hear it got better than that!

  • 1/4oz simple syrup
  • 2 dashes angostura bitters
  • 2oz Bonded Rye Whiskey

Jason Yu loves his spirit-forward cocktails, so we’re stirring this one in a beaker.

Start with simple syrup, add your aromatic bitters, and 100 proof rye whiskey. Add broken ice and stir.

Top tip: broken ice creates more surface area and chills the alcohol faster.

Single strain over a large chunk of ice. Our garnish is orange zest, make sure you express the oils onto the surface of the cocktail by squeezing the skin hard.

Top tip: Orange oil is flammable, so use a lighter and burn off the remaining oils from the skin. It crystallizes the sugars and creates a smoky complement to the dry rye whiskey.

Wipe the skin around the lip of the glass and serve with it fitted in between the ice and the glass.
